Graduate School, Purdue University
Under most circumstances in order to complete the School Counseling Program at Purdue University, an individual must be admitted to the counseling master's degree program even though the person holds a master's degree in a related area. Some of the counseling courses are open to any graduate student, but in order to be supervised during the required practicum and internship, a student ordinarily must be admitted to the counseling master's degree program at Purdue University. Graduates of the Mental Health Counseling program at Purdue, or of another Mental Health Counseling program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP), may take courses for school counseling licensure in the Purdue program, including the practicum and internship, on a space-available basis. Please contact Dr. Jean Peterson (765-494-9742, jeanp@purdue.edu) for specific questions regarding this possibility and the School Counseling Program.
If you plan to complete some of the open counseling courses at Purdue University and then apply them to a school counseling program at another institution, please confirm that the institution requires similar courses in its program and will allow them to be transferred.
An evaluation by the Office of Professional Preparation and Licensure is required for all candidates interested in the School Counseling Program. If you have further questions regarding the requirements for the master's degree program, please see Department of Educational Studies or contact the Graduate Office (765-494-2345, education-gradoffice@purdue.edu).
