What is the difference between being admitted to the College of Education and the Teacher Education Program? You are admitted to the College of Education as a freshman or as a transfer student from another university through the Office of Admissions. You may also be admitted to the College of Education after your first semester at Purdue University via the Change of Degree Objective or CODO process. You are admitted to your Teacher Education Program after having met Teacher Education Program GATE A requirements. The GATE A requirements are outlined for you on your major program sheet.
When should I be admitted to the Teacher Education Program? Fulfilling requirements for passage through GATE A in your specific program will allow you to be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Please consult with your academic counselor regarding your specific needs and progress.
Can I pursue two majors? If you are interested in obtaining a multiple major you should declare your intentions as early in your program as possible. To qualify for a multiple major, you must complete all requirements for both majors. You may not receive two (2) Bachelor of Arts degrees even if you complete the major requirements for each. All completed majors will be recorded on your final transcript, but only one diploma will be awarded.
If I get a "C" in a method course, do I have to retake it? What about a "D"? You are expected to maintain a 3.0 GPA in your education coursework. You are allowed to get a "C" in a course as long as the overall average does not drop below 3.0. All "D's" in education coursework have to be repeated.
How do I register for the PRAXIS I - PPST (Pre-Professional Skills Test)? Registration bulletins are available outside the Office of Professional Preparation and Licensure, BRNG 3229. You can also register for the computerized PPST at the Sylvan Learning Center.
Do I need to study for the PPST? It is expected that you have the skills necessary to pass this test from high school. Tests at a Glance is available at www.ets.org/praxis for an online review to each test, including sample questions with answers and explanations. If you feel you need to study, there are study guides available.
What is the foreign language requirement? The College of Education requires proficiency at the third semester level in a foreign language (201). The FLL courses 101 and 102, or 103 are levels of FLL taken to reach the 201 requirement. The credit in the lower level courses does not count toward the total number of credit hours required for graduation. However, the grades in those courses will affect your overall GPA.
Can I use sign language as my foreign language? Yes, however, the American Sign Language (ASL) courses are difficult to get into because the courses are offered through the School of Liberal Arts. Therefore, more spaces are reserved for their students. It is highly recommended you start another language other than ASL. Usually, a student in the School of Education does not get into ASL 101 until their senior year. Completion of a foreign language at the third semester is a requirement for graduation.
How do I know if the courses I take at another college will transfer to Purdue? It is recommended you meet with your academic counselor before starting this process. Courses taken at a Purdue University Regional Campus will automatically transfer but may not fulfill a program requirement. For courses taken at other universities there is a form called a CTR Form 5 that should be completed before a course is taken at that university. This form is processed/evaluated by Credit Evaluation, who makes the decision regarding how a course will transfer to Purdue University. Your academic counselor will receive a copy of the CTR Form 5 evaluation and make the determination if the course(s) can be used to meet your degree requirements.
