Secondary Education

Program Characteristics

The Transition to Teaching (TTT) Partnership for Secondary Teacher Education at Purdue University is designed for "career changers" whose goal is to become licensed to teach in Indiana middle, junior high, and high schools.  Purdue's TTT Partnership Program for Secondary Education aims to provide quality preparation for adults who are entering teaching as a new career. The following program characteristics are based on the guiding principles (DOC) established for this program:

  • Enables initial teacher licensure for individuals who currently are teaching with an emergency permit and/or have considerable experience working with youth in community settings.
  • Provides advising, professional education coursework, and, as necessary, content-area preparation geared for the candidate's specific licensure area.
  • To the extent possible, is structured to enable candidates who wish to maintain their current employment to do so during much, if not all, of the program.
  • Assesses content preparation which is accomplished separately from professional education preparation and may require additional coursework depending on the candidate's academic background and other life experiences. Content preparation is related to the specific licensure desired in order to successfully meet professional and/or state teacher standards as well as assist K-12 students achieve competence in the K-12 standards.
  • Comprises a total of 18 credit hours of graduate-level coursework in professional education for pedagogical preparation. This coursework could be applied to a graduate-degree program if desired by qualified candidates.
  • Is structured in a modified cohort format, with Introductory and Capstone Seminars that are held in consecutive summers with participants from various licensure areas (3 credit hours total).
  • Features a pedagogical core based on the specific licensure area and the individual participant's background and needs (12 credit hours).
  • Includes a school-based, individually designed, graduate-level internship completed under the guidance of a university supervisor. An individual who is teaching on a permit may be able to complete this internship in conjunction with his/her position. For others, the internship provides a full-time teaching experience comparable to undergraduate-level student teaching (EDCI 69500, 3 credit hours).
  • Culminates with an individually-designed professional portfolio in which the candidate documents his/her achievement of the Indiana Department of Education Division of Professional Standards developmental and content standards for Indiana teachers and competence in K-12 student standards in the desired licensure area.
  • Can be completed in as little as one calendar year. This timeframe could be extended, depending on individual needs and preferences.

Note: In addition to the TTT Program, Purdue also offers a post-baccalaureate licensure program and opportunities for a second bachelor's degree for applicants for whom a program at the undergraduate level is better suited and/or who do not meet the qualifications for the TTT program.Transition to Teaching programs also are available through other Indiana teacher-education institutions. Completing a TTT program also may be accomplished in conjunction with a graduate degree program, if a degree program is offered.

Before applying to the TTT Partnership for Secondary Education, interested individuals are urged to review the program structure and requirements and determine whether their personal needs and interests are best served by the TTT program, a post baccalaureate licensure program, a second bachelor's degree program, or if they should seek another institution of higher education that better meets their needs.

Please review the application requirements to determine whether the Purdue TTT program is a good match for your qualifications and career goals.

Enrollment Limits and Partnership Program Availability

Purdue's Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the specific program areas will collaboratively determine the minimum and maximum number of applicants admitted into the program. Consequently, applicants will be admitted to the program if there is 1) sufficient space remaining and 2) an adequate number of qualified applicants admitted so that the program is economically feasible. If a qualified applicant is not admitted because of over or under enrollment (at either or both the overall and program-specific levels), the applicant's file will be retained, and the applicant may request admittance for the following year's program.

    Partnership Program Structure

Purdue University's TTT Partnership for Secondary Education is divided into three main components:

    1) Introductory Seminar (1 credit)
    2) Pedagogical Core with Internship in Education (15 credits)
    3) Capstone Seminar (2 credits)

The Introductory Seminar and Capstone Seminar are required for all participants.  However, the Pedagogical Core and the Internship in Education will be based on the participant's personal background and his/her content area's uniqueness.

Each participant will begin the TTT program with an Introductory Seminar during the second summer session or Module 2 (June). During this Introductory Seminar, participants will examine the overall TTT program structure and how they will be required to document each of the Division of Professional Standards Professioinal Teacher Standards and K-12 Indiana's Academic Standard in a professional portfolio that will be part of their final program assessment. Participants also will learn about teaching as a career and other general educational issues.

The second component of the program, the Pedagogical Core, is tailored to individual participants and programs. The pedagogical core is aligned with Purdue's conceptual framework, appropriate Indiana Professional Standards Board developmental and pedagogical standards for teachers. The core components of the TTT program will be based on each participant's documented competencies and licensure needs. The review of the participant's previous coursework and experiences, conducted during the application processes, will be used as the basis for determining each participant's program of study.  Program area faculty, acting as advisors, will assist participants with program planning.

The pedagogical core consists of a total of 15 credit hours, 3 of which must be EDCI 695, Internship in Education. This school-based, individually designed, graduate-level internship is completed under the guidance of a university supervisor. An individual who is teaching on a permit could complete this internship in conjunction with his/her position. Others complete the internship as a field experience that provides full-time teaching experience comparable to undergraduate-level student teaching.

The final component of the program is the Capstone Seminar. After the completion of the Pedagogical Core, participants will complete a Capstone Seminar during the second summer session, or Module 2 (June). This seminar will integrate the participants' learning experiences and assist with documentation of their competencies in their professional portfolio. During this seminar, participants will present results of the action research project they conducted during their internship experience (EDCI 69500).

The TTT Partnership is designed for completion in one calendar year, starting in June and finishing in June of the following year. However, participants may take up to two years and possibly more to complete the TTT program. Requests to extend the program timeline beyond two years will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
